malas
A mala is a string of beads with one summit bead, called "guru bead."
Malas are used in japa, the meditative repetition of a mantra or the name of God. The number of beads in the japa mala is generally 108, which has great significance in Hindu traditions.
Making malas is a meditation in itself for me, as it involves repetitive work and chanting. I work with semi-precious stones, wood and other materials to create these malas. Some are hand-knotted between each bead, for increased longevity.
